Hurray for the Gold, White and Gray!
The original USTEAA banner made years ago was gray. It mysteriously disappeared after being displayed in an annual picnic get-together. Nobody remembers who took it home.
When Toots Ciocon suggested that USTEAA should have another banner as replacement, he called upon his wife Del, who is not only a very artistic graphic designer but who is one of the strongest non-member pillars of USTEAA, to lend a hand in the conceptualization and design of the new banner. Del took this opportunity to conceptualize a Gold and White banner, and came up with a few designs.
The banner project was placed in the back burner for years until 2007, when then President, Les Mariano, resurrected the project with a committee to complete a 3’x 6’ banner and a pennant. At the request of the USTEAA banner committee, Del dug up her old banner designs. She modified her ideas to incorporate UST’s Gold and White and the UST Faculty of Engineering’s Gray and White school colors. Del’s artistic mind cleverly came up with superimposing the UST Logo against the gold and white backdrop, and the UST Engineering Logo against the gray and white backdrop.
After weeks of back and forth email and phone discussions between Del and the banner committee, Del came up with 9 design variations, each one better than the other. The committee narrowed down the choices to 3 for all members to vote on. A winner was born.
The banner’s fabrication headache is another story. We are talking pixelated images, rubber-band effects, and color rendition problems, among other things. Del had quite an experience with the printers to meet their requirements, necessitating further alterations to her design in order to improve the image resolution. She successfully managed to bring the products to completion, after a failed attempt by the committee to have it printed in the Philippines due to the aforementioned problems. Were it not for the Ciocons, this banner project would have been placed in the back burner once again.
And here is the winner: Banner Design #2, shown in photo, which unanimously won, less 1 vote. The unified 2-part flag ingeniously represents both the University of Santo Tomas and the UST Faculty of Engineering. The banner committee proudly labels the final design “The 2-in-1 Banner”, because it captures the spirit of our alma mater university and our faculty of engineering in one breadth. Our new and improved USTEAA banner made her debut at the July 11, 2009 annual picnic.
The pennant is a spin-off from the banner design, extracting the UST Faculty of Engineering’s half from the 2-in-1 banner.
Thank you, Del, for a job superbly done. ■
