Community Service 2009
By Evelyn Jara Masaoy, ChE ‘63
Rain or shine, snow or sleet … the work goes on within the massive warehouses of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. This is not at all surprising because the NJ Food Bank stores and distributes life-sustaining packages for humanity in distress. This place is the jump-off point of boxed, packaged, ready-to-go food stuff, cleaning agents, clothes, laundry articles, etc. which have to be sent out on short notice whenever and wherever the need arises.
A group of USTEAA(USA) members and friends volunteered for work last May 30, 2009. President Ray and his wife Melanie led the group which included Toots and Del Ciocon, Rey and Fe Maximo, Nitoy and Cora Canete, Beth de Guzman, Les Mariano, Rosanne Silvino, Evelyn Masaoy and her two guests Kiara and Connie.
We were shown huge boxes of donations. Our job was to sort them out and discard expired stuff. We did quite a lot of work, ended tired and hungry but with a good feeling that goes with having done a little service for others.
Come May 2010, we would need more helping hands. Do join us. They never run out of things for us to do. ■
