An Evening of Beautiful Music

By Roly M. Catiis, ChE ‘63

It was a rainy evening on November 15, 2008.  Despite the weather, the Kayumanggi Chorale’s “An Evening of Music and Song - in Thanksgiving” concert sponsored by USTEAA was very well attended by officers, members, friends and family.

The Christ the King Church in Hillside provided the perfect stage. President Ray Zipagan delivered a warm welcome address, followed by Marilen Eusebio, who acquainted everyone with the mission of the association, noting the worthy causes for which the proceeds of the concert are earmarked.  USTEAA Secretary Evelyn Masaoy led the opening prayer.

The 2-part program was very well planned.  The opening song, “Lord Make Me Thine Instrument”, gave a powerful message.  Equally well-performed and absorbing tunes followed, which included inspiring renditions of “When You Believe” and “Libiamo ne’lieti calici” (from La Traviata”).

In Part 2, listeners were regaled with an interesting potpourri of Philippine and Broadway songs.  A charming medley of “Ako’y Pilipino/Sa Libis Ng Nayon/Sa Kabukiran” had the audience wanting more.  For an encore performance, soloist soprano Bamba Masaoy and the group sang the popular Spanish song “Eres Tu”, to everyone’s great delight.

Surely it was Kayumanggi Chorale at its best! Ably led and accompanied on the keyboard by Dr. Dennis Bernardo, the choral group’s superb renditions of every song in their unique repertoire uplifted everyone’s spirits.

Rev. Msgr. Venantius Fernando, Pastor, thanked everyone for this wonderful evening of music and songs.  He also acknowledged USTEAA’s contribution to the parish.

Sincere thanks go to the members of the Concert Committee: Ric Bisda, Flor Cariaga, Marilen Eusebio, Alice Francisco, Linda Sumulong, Evelyn Masaoy, Cita and Dick Tibay whose untiring dedication and commitment contributed to the success of this event.

The warm reception and fellowship after the concert gave everyone a chance to mingle and socialize, leaving everyone fortified for the weeks ahead and delighted by a beautiful pre-Thanksgiving and Christmas gift better than anyone could have imagined!

Needless to say, our Scholarship Fund Drive got an early Christmas gift from the proceeds of this event. ■
