The annual USTEAA picnic was held this year on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Skytop picnic area of the Watchung Reservation in New Jersey. We couldn’t have picked a better day. A succession of rainy days prior to the event had eased up to give us a day with sunny skies and cool breezes.
The turnout for the event was good, with members and families driving in from the NJ, NY and PA areas. We were fortunate to have alumni who came thousands of miles from CA and Switzerland to join us. For several new members, the picnic also served as a delightful introduction.
A key part of the event was the election of the officers for 2010-2011. Each member cast their ballot as they registered. The results were announced later in the program.
While the ballots were being tabulated, the members enjoyed a sumptuous feast. A secret asset of the USTEAA is the excellent culinary skills of a number of members and spouses, and that was clearly evident at this potluck event. There were four tables laden with delicious food, including Filipino favorites like lechon, palabok, empanada and turon.
A short program followed lunch. President Ray Zipagan welcomed the members and guests. The election results were announced and the incoming officers warmly congratulated. Incoming president, Feli Izar, talked briefly about her plans for the association for the next two years. One proposed project is a Mentoring program. Former USTEAA president Les Mariano gave a short description of this initiative.
The fun continued with games, line dancing, 50/50 and door prize drawings, and group photographs. Bong Alcid, Ch.E. ’63, took pictures of members proudly posing next to the USTEAA pennant. A big thank you goes to Toots and Del Ciocon, who created the stunning new banner and pennant for the association.
Thanks to all who organized this year’s picnic and to all who attended. We all went home recharged and refreshed. See you all at next year’s event! ■
